Antwerp Belgium Travel Guide

Jazz is big. Fashion is big. Beer is all the rage, with the city's light-red, malty "house beer," De Koninck, drunk in those chalice-shaped bolleke glasses. There are Marian statuettes on street corners in the center of town, almond-and-milk-chocolate short-pastry biscuits at the cafés, the Baroque art of Rubens and Van Dyck on panels at the old churches, 16th-century guildhalls at the Grote Markt, and diamonds, locally cut in the Diamond District, at the local jewelers. If you go to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, you'll see Theodoor Boeyermans' Nurse of Painters; if you head over to the Antwerp Jazz Club, you can catch a few sets of some pretty cool jazz; and if you pop down to Nationalestraat, the hub of the city's fashion district, you'll be literally drowning in fashion! So, a surprising sort of place, no?
