Barossa Valley
Barossa Valley Australia
It's the heart of South Australia's wine country. Here, you can slow-roll down country roads, twisting around hills and past lush, estate vineyards, stopping by cellar doors – there are 150-plus wineries here! – to sip a rich, ripe, full-bodied Shiraz with hints of red plum and blackberry, or a lightly-chilled Riesling or Sémillon. There are small, quaint towns in the valley, dotted with stone cottages and Lutheran churches, and vintage and craft shops to poke around. Tanunda, the main hub, is brimming with restaurants, bakeries, cafés, and cellars where you can parse the properties of those Barossa varietals; in Nuriootpa you can tour the likes of Penfolds, Elderton and Wolf Blass wineries and learn how wine is made; in Angaston you can feast on at least a dozen varieties of German sausage at a realtime, 19th-century wurst shop; and in Hahndorf you'll discover a pretty-as-they-come hamlet literally dripping with atmosphere.
