Hunter Valley Australia

[Last updated January 6, 2021]

It’s the oldest wine region in Oz, where Sémillon, that rich, creamy, lemony white varietal, is king. You can go cellar door to cellar door – there are over 150 of them here – twirling that wineglass and sniffing and sipping as you go. But head over to Pokolbin, a wine village cum foodie joint in the heart of the valley, just to the south of the Hunter River, rife with pubs and restaurants where you'll find all the local wines. Or, just hit up the cellar doors in town, the likes of Briar Ridge, Pepper Tree, Brokenwood, Ivanhoe and Kevin Sobel. At Tulloch Wines you can even splash at the winery-restaurant, Muse Kitchen, to feast on a four-course lunch, starting with fried brussels sprouts with chili and feta and main-coursing with a slow-cooked-lamb-centered shepherd’s pie. Oh, and for a change of scene, pop into the Matilda Bay Brewhouse for a flight of their handcrafted brews – hops for grapes, right? – or the Hunter Distillery for a lick of mango liquor! – it'll make your day!
