Gili Trawangan Indonesia

[Last updated January 1, 2021]

This place is pure party island, with thatched lounges and bars along a one-horse street, many of them spilling onto the beach. There are lots of backpackers and a mostly younger crowd. And there’s a bit of that set-back-in-time quality too, with no cars – none! – and only horse-drawn taxi-carriages and push-pedal bikes to get around the island on. You can ride on a glass-bottomed skiff to see sea turtles and tropical fish, splash on a pristine, white-sand paradise beach, slow-walk down this totally-chill, totally-laidback Main Street, fly-fish with locals in the shallows, and even sink your teeth into seafood kabobs and pandanus fruit. Oh, Lombok's just a few strokes to the east, literally! and the best all-round views are from the volcanic peak, Mount Rinjani. And yeah, like everyone else, you can call it Gili T.
