Hamelin Germany Travel Guide
It’s the locale of the Pied Piper. You’ll see carved, colorful rats scattered around town, and all types of rat-centric paraphernalia in souvenir shops. You can nibble on rat-shaped cookies and bread at the local bakeries, and, if you go to Kastanienwall Straße in the Old Town, you can even see a statue of the 13th-century fairytale rat-catcher playing his flute. Yep. But linger in the Markt square or stroll down Osterstraße or Bäckerstraße and you’ll discover lovely old Weser Renaissance buildings, including the Rattenfängerhaus (Rat Catcher’s House) and Rattenkrug (Rat’s Tankard), both housing atmospheric old restaurants where you can kick back with a serving of kale, potatoes, smoked pork and Bregenwurst sausages, with a slice of apple streusel cake for dessert, and maybe a cup of East Frisian tea to top it off. Pure small-town medieval charm!
