Canterbury England Travel Guide
It’s a pretty city, with history coming out of its ears. And you’ll see. There’s a fabulous cathedral with triumphal towers, turrets, spires, large stained-glass windows, stone carvings and whatnot, dating from the Middle Ages, where Archbishop Thomas Beckett was assassinated in 1170. And as you walk to it, you’ll find Chaucer’s collection of verse and prose, The Canterbury Tales, come alive. Meander in Buttermarket, an atmospheric old square in the medieval heart of the walled city, and join the boys at one of the pubs there for a pint or two, or wander down Butchery Lane, a narrow, brick-paved strip, and poke around in the quaint shops and boutiques. The streets are mostly cobbled, crowded with timber-frame buildings. And really, it’s a trip – back in time!
