When you get there and look around, you’re likely to wonder whether you’re still in California or have somehow arrived in New England. There are sea-worn Victorians and Cape Cod-style clapboard cottages, a few even with weathervanes and white picket fences, housing B&B inns and bakeries where you can nibble on fresh raspberry bark or pain au chocolat alongside your iced chai. There are vegan cafés and seafood restaurants looking out over the ocean, and artists’ studios and galleries showing locally-inspired seascapes and landscapes. And if you go to the headlands awash in wildflowers and overlooking a rocky shore with crashing surf, you’ll have clear views over the Pacific and, in November, even spy whales just offshore – heading south!
