San Sebastián (Donostia) Spain

[Last updated January 7, 2021]

It’s a fun place, overrun with Basque separatists. No kidding! Here, you can splash on the broad sweep of sand at La Concha beach, maybe just stroll along the promenade there for those grand views of the Bay of Biscay, or head over to Zurriola beach just up the coast to watch surfers ride some serious waves. In the old quarter of Parte Vieja you’ll find scores of pintxo bars and Basque restaurants crowding narrow, cobbled streets, and you can go bar-hopping there, just like the locals, drinking txakoli, a mildly sparkling dry white wine that’s all the rage, and feasting on some of the best pintxos – Basque tapas – in the land. But listen, you’re in the heart of the Basque Country here, so, at least while you’re in town, call it “Donostia."
